Penreach_03Since its establishment 23 years ago, Penreach has grown from a local teacher development outreach project to a fully-fledged NGO that annually reaches thousands of teachers and learners across Mpumalanga province, addressing key challenges facing education in South Africa.

Established with the founding of Penryn College in 1991, it was officially named Penreach in 1994. Penreach quickly became a catalyst for improving the quality of education in disadvantaged communities in the Lowveld.

Currently, Penreach reaches more than 1 400 educators a year (from more than 600 schools), who voluntarily attend skills development workshops on Saturdays. Indirectly Penreach reaches 370 000 learners per annum.

Interventions in Early Childhood Development (ECD) in South Africa have been lacking in most rural communities, evident in both the large number of early school-leavers as well as in poor Grade 12 results. Children between the ages of 0 -5 years in the Kabokweni and Bohlabela districts are the direct beneficiaries of the current and planned Penreach Early Childhood Development programme. Children in our present pipeline have shown a 23% improvement in key development areas compared to baseline assessment results.
