Ububele, a registered Non-Profit Organization (NPO) and Public Benefit Organization (PBO), was established as a mental health training institute by two clinical psychologists, Tony and Hillary Hamburger, in 1999 in Kew on the border of Alexandra in the north of Johannesburg in South Africa. It has developed models of community-based psychosocial care and support which seek to address the emotional trauma of South Africa’s past, the ongoing mental and physical trauma of life in the cycle of poverty and its daily manifestations faced by disadvantaged individuals, families and communities.
Ububele is a mental health training institute that focuses on preventative strategies for children under the age of seven as well as their parents and other caregivers. Ububele brings psychology into poor communities, whose mental health needs are not adequately provided for by the state.
