The Technical Schools Turnaround Project is an innovative project that is being implemented at John Orr Technical High School (JOTHS) in Johannesburg, South Africa. JOTHS is a school that has historically performed at a high level, but has recently been sliding in learner achievement at Grade 12 level. After an engagement between the principal and the Minister of the Executive Council (MEC) of the Gauteng province, the Sasol Inzalo Foundation was identified to work with the school to develop a turnaround project. The project at John Orr was earmarked to create a replicable model which could be implemented in all technical high schools. Education Moving Up (EMU), a company specializing in school turnaround, was hired to facilitate the Senior Leadership (SLT) and Senior Management Team (SMT) turnaround process, as well as the development of Organisational Development (OD) systems to ensure sustainability beyond the project years.
